南非第一個民選總統、諾貝爾和平獎得主納爾遜．曼德拉於 2013 年12月5日去世，享年九十五歲。曼德拉因對抗南非種族隔離制度坐了廿七年牢，1990 年獲釋，並在四年後當上總統。一任任期後便即卸任，這樣的舉動在非洲政界非常少見。
這位廣受國際愛戴的領袖對文字的使用令人印象深刻。他最著名的一段話是他 1964 年瑞佛尼亞審判中在法庭所作的辯護陳詞。他說：
我對抗白人統治，我也對抗黑人統治。我珍視民主自由社會，所有人能和諧共處，擁有均等的機會。我為此理想而生，也希望有朝一日能達成這個理想。但如果有必要，我也準備好為這理想而死。
除了瑞佛尼亞審判陳詞外，曼德拉一生留下許多充滿智慧的語錄。他雖然過世了，但透過推特網友們的分享，他的名言依然在世上流傳。
